My calligraphy journey started in 1997 when I was planning my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. I had always considered myself to be naturally artistic and I had nice handwriting so I was intent on addressing her invitations. I thought to myself, “there is no way I am paying someone to do what I am capable of doing!” After attending a few calligraphy classes at a local South Florida high school, I took the little bit of knowledge I gained and addressed my daughter’s invitations. I struggled to complete the task, but proudly sent out the rudimentary envelopes I had addressed.
Realizing that calligraphy involved more than just nice handwriting, I began private tutoring with a very experienced calligrapher. I started by learning one of the many “hands” (or styles of writing) one letter at a time. I would practice writing that one letter over and over until our next tutoring session. I eventually progressed to a second hand…and practiced more. I learned about different types of pens, nibs, ink, and paper. I learned about the different angles of the pen point, the pressure of the pen, how to mix ink, and proper etiquette in addressing envelopes. Finally, I built enough skill and confidence to start taking on calligraphy jobs, which ultimately gave me the most valuable practice.
I eventually joined the South Florida Calligraphy Guild, a non-profit organization founded in 1981. I attended meetings and workshops with other calligraphers and picked up many tips including how to run a business. In addition, I became a vendor of THE KNOT wedding website which generated many leads and great reviews.
From there, my business flourished. I gained clients through word-of-mouth, local Florida stationary store referrals, and eventually through my professional website. Clients were in awe of how beautiful their envelopes came out and I came to appreciate that each letter I write is a piece of art. Over time, calligraphy has become my passion and means of relaxation. With hand calligraphy being a “dying art”, I soon realized that my talent is in demand.
WHY HAND CALLIGRAPHY?
Many people ask “Why should I spend the money on hand calligraphy when most people just throw out the envelopes?” Because your invitation is the first introduction that people have to your event; a beautiful envelope will set the stage for your event and make a lasting first impression on your guests. Handwritten calligraphy can also be tailored to complement the style of your carefully picked invitation, which cannot be replicated with a computer or address label. As a professional calligrapher, not only do my clients receive beautiful envelopes, but I also provide etiquette tips for properly addressing an envelope and when to mail out the invitations. I strive to provide each client with ample personal attention and professional guidance needed to make the process go as smoothly as possible.
